Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) is the foundation of Islam. It refers to the belief in the absolute unity of Allah in His Lordship, Worship, and Names and Attributes. Tawheed is the most fundamental principle of Islam, distinguishing it from all other faiths.

Meaning of Tawheed

Linguistically, Tawheed comes from the Arabic root word "وحد" (Wahhada), which means to make something one. In Islamic terminology, it refers to the oneness of Allah in all aspects of divinity.

Importance of Tawheed in Islam

Tawheed is the essence of Islam. Without it, a person’s faith is incomplete.

Allah says in the Quran:

"And We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him that there is no deity except Me, so worship Me." (Surah Al-Anbiya 25)

Types of Tawheed

Tawheed is divided into three categories:

1. Tawheed al-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship

Belief that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe.

No one shares His authority.

The Quran states:

"Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs." (Surah Az-Zumar 62)

2. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship)

Worship belongs to Allah alone.
No partner is associated with Him in acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, supplication, and sacrifice.

Allah commands:

"And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth." (Surah Al-Bayyinah 5)

3. Tawheed al-Asma wa Sifat (Oneness of Names and Attributes)

Belief in all the names and attributes of Allah as mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah.

No comparison of Allah’s attributes with His creation.

Allah says:

"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (Surah Ash-Shura 11)

The Dangers of Shirk (Associating Partners with Allah)

Shirk (polytheism) is the greatest sin in Islam, as it contradicts Tawheed. Allah warns:

"Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." (Surah An-Nisa 48)

How to Strengthen Tawheed

Reciting and understanding the Quran.

Following the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Avoiding innovations and superstitions.

Seeking knowledge from authentic Islamic sources.

Conclusion

Tawheed is the foundation of a Muslim’s faith. It shapes a believer’s life and actions. A Muslim must uphold the oneness of Allah in belief, worship, and attributes, avoiding any form of shirk. By practicing true Tawheed, one attains success in this life and the Hereafter.
